Don Francisco's Sábado Gigante Cancelled After 53 Years

After more than 53 years on air, Sábado Gigante, the longest-running variety show, is airing for the last time on Sept. 19, 2015. Univision announced in a press release on its website that even though the show hosted by Don Francisco (whose real name is Mario Kreutzberger) still holds the highest ratings on Saturday nights among Spanish speakers, it won't be renewed after next season. Don Francisco, who has been with Univision since the '80s and created the show in Chile in 1962, will continue to host specials for the channel including the TeletonUSA, which collects donations for children with disabilities, and be tasked with finding and training new on-air talent. There's no news yet on what will replace the three-hour show, but we already know our Saturday nights won't be the same without Don Francisco's cheery disposition and all those ridiculous sketches we grew up watching — we already miss La Cuatro and El Chacal.
